May 24: Psalm 108-110

May 24, Psalm 108-110

Psalm 108 Confidence and assurance in God results in us praising Him. At your core, are you ready to live a life of praise to God and let nothing get you off that path? This is where we need to be. Like David, we are to be ready to thank God publicly, around the world - not just in our little corner of the world. God is King of the Universe!
God keeps His promises. We can put our faith in God and His ability to always do what He says He will do. Also, how do we conquer? Can we do it our way or on our own? No, “With God we shall do valiantly; it is He who will tread down our foes.”

Psalm 109 This is an interesting Psalm/prayer. Basically, the Psalmist is dealing with being accused by leaders, in kind of a court setting, and is innocent. Be not silent…O God of my praise! When being attacked, we need to lean on and cry out to God to hear us and guide us. The accusers here are wicked and liars, and the only help will come from God. Apparently, David was close to these people, as they are returning his love with hatred - which hurts even more. His prayer against them is astounding and David knew that The penalty for accusing someone of a certain crime falsely was the penalty corresponding to that crime (Reformation Study Bible). This is interesting to note then, why David could pray the way that he did. The accusations must have been atrocious. Ultimately, where does David turn? “But you, O God my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name's sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!” This is where we are to turn as well, for God’s name sake, we can trust that it will work out.

Psalm 110 is a Prophetic Psalm about the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah and this Psalm is referenced quite a bit in the New Testament. David did not see himself as deity, as we see in Acts 2:34, “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand…” I have found a great summary of verse 1 from the Reformation Study Bible, and I wanted to share it because this verse can be confusing… Lord. As the translators indicate with the use of small capital letters, this is God’s name, Yahweh. Lord. This title is often used for God but can also be addressed to a king or other respected person. The New Testament makes it clear that King David refers to his Son as his “Lord” (Mark 12:35–37). The promised Messiah descended from David but is greater than David. See “Jesus’ Heavenly Reign” at Acts 7:55. at my right hand. The place of honor. After His resurrection, Jesus was exalted to the right hand of God in heaven. your enemies. In the Old Testament they were physical flesh and blood enemies of Israel. In the New Testament the battle is intensified, as Jesus fights against the invisible, cosmic powers of evil. footstool. A place of disgrace, symbolizing subjugation. After a victory, Near Eastern leaders would humiliate their defeated enemies by stepping on their heads or necks. I hope that helps break it down, it sure helped me understand better.
We also learn that in verse 4 that Jesus was to be not only the King, but the Priest for us. This is extremely powerful that Jesus will function in both of these roles. Jesus came from the line of David, and will still be priest even though he did not come from the line of Aaron. Jesus will also, as King, execute judgment among the nations in the last days.

To sum it all up:

  • We can put our faith in God and His ability to always do what He says He will do. There is no better place to be spiritually than in God’s love. Whatever is going on in your life right now, rest assured that God knew about it and is right there to get you through it… remember that He has a plan for your life and it connects with His Master plan!
  • Have you ever been accused by ‘Christians’ and maligned? It is hard when this happens and even though it is horrible, God is still good and will make things right, even when it seems dismal.
  • I hope you enjoy reading about what they were saying would happen in Jesus did actually happen. It gives me great peace knowing that something written thousands of years earlier would come true. I have confidence that my God is the only God and His Words are accurate and trustworthy
