May 1, 2 Samuel 5:1-10, 1 Chronicles 11-12
2 Samuel 5:1-10 David is anointed King over all of Israel at 30 years old. All the tribes and elders approved of God’s call on David’s life. In a snapshot, David reigned over Israel 40 years. At that time, David went against the Jebusites in battle, and won. This is where he set up the City of David - the capital of Israel. David grew stronger and greater because God was with him.
1 Chronicles 11 David is anointed King over all of Israel, the Chroniclers account. We are given more details here about the start of his Kingship. But what is reiterated again? David grew stronger and greater because God was with him. This is a piece of information that is pivotal to the Kingship of David - he was great because God was with him! Then we read about the list of David’s Mighty Men and their place. These may seem just like names to us, but these were individuals and his trusted men that fought for him. Take a note that one of his mighty men, in verse 41 was Uriah the Hittite, we will have to know that for later. But note that he was a mighty man, fighting for David. There is even a few stories recalled about how some of them became great. David also respected his warriors deeply.
1 Chronicles 12 Then we learn about some more mighty men that joined David and the history behind their loyalty and it was when Saul was against David and have stood by him… a bunch of Benjamites that were talented warriors. All noted as being courageous men. They were loyal to David and made them officers of his troops. All of these men and all of Israel wanted David to be their King, and so it was. When it was official, Israelites came from all around to celebrate for three days, and there was joy in the land.
- One of my favorite lines from a movie series… ‘Never despise meager beginnings.’ David had some meager beginnings, including his motley crew of soldiers. But, God was building David for what He wanted. In your own life, what is God building you up for? Maybe you have no idea, but rest assured, God does. It is possible that the battles you are facing today are building your faith for tomorrow. So don’t lose hope in Christ or become short-sighted in your battles. God is with you. Even if you start off with meager beginnings, don't be doubtful of God working in your life, as well...Always know that God is there for you.
