About this study

Thanks for stopping by my site. I decided last year (2015) to do a Bible study/commentary while going through the Bible chronologically. It is geared more towards those who haven't read much of the Bible... Join me on this journey?

June 18: Proverbs 27-29

June 18, Proverbs 27-29

Proverbs 27 We have a continuation of wisdom vs folly. God is calling us to pursue wisdom and run from folly. If wisdom is at your core, and is your hearts desire, then “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” Wisdom will be covered with humility. If you have done something amazing, let others tell about it. It has really no value and reveals your pride, when you share how amazing you are. Folly is destructive. Flee from it. In addition to humility, to be wise means that you are teachable and in doing so, you will bless those around you and closest to you. Pay attention to what God has placed in your life - for riches are fleeting - so have your priorities reflect what God has given you.

Proverbs 28 contains more theological proverbs than some of the other chapters. If you are righteous and pursing wisdom, you will do tangible things to show it… like take care of the poor, seek the Lord, obeys the Torah (God’s Law), fears the Lord, works hard, and pursue God.

Proverbs 29 How true this is, “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Society benefits from those that are pursuing righteousness and wisdom. Interesting to note as well, like we talked about earlier, “He who loves wisdom makes his father glad..” You bless those around you when you pursue wisdom! Then we are moved on to the other part of the proverb, “but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.” This is the direct opposite of blessing those around you, this disgraces yourself and those around you.
Have nothing to do with flattery - it is lying and selfish. You flatter to manipulate, not to genuinely love people. Another huge theme throughout this chapter is self-control. If you lack self-control, you exemplify foolishness not wisdom.

To sum it all up:

  • Fear God and purse wisdom. Be selfless. Practice self-control. Now, go do it!!!
