October 17, Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9:1-17
Matthew, Mark & Luke continued…
Today there is overlap of a few stories, so I will write them out and articulate any difference if there are…
- John the Baptist’s death. Herod had heard about this ‘Jesus’ and how famous He was.. they couldn't figure out who He was because He was so miraculous. The background is that Herod arrested john & put him in prison for the sake of Herodias (Herod married his brother’s wife and John told Herod it was wrong and unlawful to have her). Herod wanted to kill John but feared the people to much because the people held him in high esteem as a prophet almost. Now, the party. The daughter of Herodias, who was about 13 years old give or take, does a ‘dance’ for Herod and the guests and pleased him. So much so, that Herod offered to give this girl whatever she wanted (obviously this was a sensual style of a dance). With the influence of her mother, she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a plate. Yeah, I know - incredible. King was sorry, but had to keep his word. They killed John & delivered his head on a platter. John’s disciples came and grabbed his body and buried him and then went and told Jesus. Horrific story.
- Jesus feeds the 5,000. How cool is this? We must be careful because if you have been a Christ follower for any time, you may have heard this story and I don't want you to just read it and continue on. Think about this whole story… Jesus is trying to withdraw and be away from everybody as he had just heard about his good friend John's death. But the crowds would not leave him alone. God is always at work. So, when Jesus saw the people that needed him, he had compassion on them and taught them. When it became nightfall, the disciples wanted to send all the people away, as they didn't have enough food to feed them all. What was Jesus's response? Feed them. Truth is, they only had five loaves of bread and two fish - hardly enough to feed thousands of people. Jesus instructed the disciples to bring him the meager amount food and get the people sitting in groups. Jesus asked God to bless the food & then He broke the bread and literally it multiplied before their eyes. So much so, that he was able to feed what they believe to be upwards of 10,000 people. They had 12 baskets of food left over, significant because there are 12 tribes of Israel! Just think about how amazing this would've been…
- Jesus Walks on Water. After this, Jesus had his disciples take off because He wanted to be alone. He went to go pray. It was evening time and he was alone but the disciples boat was getting beat pretty hard by the weather. So, Jesus went out and walked on water towards his disciples! Seriously, think about it. He literally walked on water towards his disciples were in the middle of the lake!!! They were freaked out because they thought they were seeing a ghost - Jesus gave them peace… then only one of them put their faith out there - that was Peter - he wanted to see if he could walk on water like Jesus. And he did, until he realized he was walking on water… as soon as he did, and he began to sink & Jesus grabbed and saved him. Jesus asked him where was his faith because it seemed he had little of it. The others disciples remained in the boat and worshipped God seeing him as the Son!
- Jesus Healed the Sick in Gennesaret. When Jesus was there, they brought many people too many healed all of them - even if they could just touch the fringe of His garment they were healed…
Mark 6 Jesus in his hometown. The people were in awe and marveled at his words, yes they questioned the fact that he came from the home of Joseph and the rest of his family was around the town? Jesus knew what they were thinking and Jesus told them that a prophet is not welcome in his hometown. He only healed a few because of their unbelief. Jesus marveled at their unbelief.
- Jesus sends out the disciples. He called the 12 disciples and sent them out in pairs of 2. No money to go with them and no extras, just faith for their journey. What were they to do? A couple thins… Bless those who receive you and shake off the dust of your feet for those who don’t. Also proclaim repentance and cast out demons and heal people!
- John the Baptist’s death, Jesus feeds the 5,000, Jesus walks on water, Jesus heals the sick in Gennesaret… Pretty much the same as in Matthew…with a little more detail.
Luke 9:1-17 Jesus sends out the disciples & Jesus feeds the 5,000, Pretty much the same as in Matthew and Mark…
To sum it all up:
- Sin. Incredible stories like this remind us of how sinful we can be. John the baptist killed because some teenager does a sexual dance and some man gets all excited and offered up whatever she wanted. How sad. Our culture is not much different I fear…
- Jesus feeds the 5,000. Yup - pretty rad our God!
- When you know the attributes of God is easier to get through life's storms. Study Him!
- Sure Peter blew it, but at least he was out in the water! Don't forget that…
- Do you believe that even if you touched the fringe of Jesus that you would be healed? ? ? ? ? its true…
